  Nick Bogaty, Sr. Business Development Manager, Adobe Systems Incorporated

Nick Bogaty is Senior Business Development Manager responsible for business development for the digital publishing group at Adobe Systems, Inc.  Nick's responsibilities at Adobe cover Adobe Digital Editions, a free client software for reading EPUB and PDF digital publications, Adobe's DRM solutions Adobe Content Server 4, EPUB support in Adobe authoring software and the Reader Mobile 9 SDK, a source code SDK for enabling mobile devices to support PDF, EPUB and Content Server 4.

Prior to Adobe, Nick was Executive Director of the IDPF and oversaw the creation and approval of the three specifications which comprise the EPUB file format for digital reflowable books.  Nick is based in New York City.
 

   
Ken Brooks, Senior VP, Global Production & Manufacturing, Cengage Learning
 
Mr. Brooks is senior vice president, global production and manufacturing services at Cengage Learning (formerly Thomson Learning) where his responsibilities include the development, production, and manufacturing of textbooks and reference content in print and digital formats across the Academic and Professional Group, Gale, and International divisions of Cengage Learning. Prior to his position at Cengage Learning, Ken was president and founder of Publishing Dimensions, a digital content services company focused in the eBook and digital strategy space. Over the course of his career, Ken has founded a Philippines-based text conversion company; a public domain publishing imprint; and a distribution-center based print-on-demand operation and has worked in trade, professional, higher education and K-12 publishing sectors. He has held several senior management positions in publishing, including vice president of digital content at Barnes & Noble, vice president of operations, production, and strategic planning at Bantam Doubleday Dell, and vice president of customer operations at Simon & Schuster. Prior to his entry into publishing, Ken was a senior manager in Andersen Consulting’s logistics strategy practice.

 

  Bob Carlton, Vice President Marketing, LibreDigital

Bob Carlton has more than 20 years experience in the development, sales and marketing of digital content services.  Bob  joined LibreDigital in February 2009,  driving the company’s product and marketing strategy.  Prior to joining LibreDigital,  Carlton write his first book, as well as working with media companies to harness the power of emerging tools and platforms in social media.  In 2007, Bob was a member of the company launch team for CourseSmart,  driving the development of the service across a multi-company  team.   Prior to CourseSmart, Carlton was at WetFeet, where he was responsible for the launch of a market-leading SaaS application and for developing strategic distribution relationships.   He was Senior Vice President for business development at Thomson Learning, responsible for strategy, sales and partnerships, negotiating strategic relationships with several leading eLearning companies to distribute the company's offerings worldwide.   Carlton has also held senior positions with information providers and publishers such as HarperCollins, Harcourt and Holt.   Bob just finished Jeff Jarvis’ What Would Google Do on his Kindle.

 
Neelan Choksi, Chief Operating Officer, Lexcycle
 
Neelan Choksi is the COO of Lexcycle, the company behind Stanza.  With over 1.8 million users in over 60 countries and over 8 million e-books downloaded, Stanza is the most popular e-book reader for the iPhone and IPod Touch.
 
Prior to joining Lexcycle, Neelan was the COO at SpringSource, the company behind the popular open source Spring Framework. Neelan served as the co-founder and President at SolarMetric, a leading object relational mapping provider, which was acquired by BEA Systems in 2005. Neelan also worked for TechTrader, Andersen Consulting Strategic Services and Exxon Research & Engineering.

Neelan currently serves on the boards of SpringSource and Tasktop Technologies. Neelan is a graduate of MIT (and was part of the often-publicized MIT Blackjack team), Stevens Institute of Technology, and the University of Chicago Booth Graduate School of Business.
 
Jordan Christensen, Product Manager, Shortcovers
 
Jordan Christensen is the Product Manager for Shortcovers, helping to plan the future of reading on the devices you already have. Before moving to the Shortcovers team, Jordan was the Online Architect for Indigo.ca, Canada's Largest Book Retailers online site, and launched community.indigo.ca, Canada's Largest Online Booklover Community.
 


 

Garth Conboy, President, eBook Technologies, Inc.

Garth Conboy is President of eBook Technologies, Inc.  The company operates in the consumer, enterprise and technologies licensing markets and provides a broad set of industry proven eBook technologies.

Prior to co-founding ETI, Garth served as the General Manager and Vice President Software Engineering for the Gemstar eBook Group. In this position he was responsible for the operation of the division: platform and server engineering, quality assurance, content acquisition, content operations, content engineering, and customer support.


Garth led the Platform, Content Tools and Content Engineering groups for the Gemstar eBook Group. Garth is inventor or co-inventor of seven issued eBook patents; technologies include: cryptography and secure content distribution, eBook UI, resource/database dynamic conversion for cross-platform applications, and optimal paginated document presentation. Garth previously held the position of Vice President of Software Engineering at SoftBook Press.

Prior to the eBook effort, Garth founded Pacer Software and served as its CEO guiding it to a successful acquisition. Following the acquisition of Pacer Garth served as Engineering Director for NetManage, a leading supplier of networking and connectivity solutions. 
 
Cynthia Cleto, Global Manager for eBooks, Springer Science + Business Media
 
Cynthia Cleto is the Global Manager for eBooks at Springer Science+Business Media. She is responsible for market penetration, product development, and other commercial aspects of the Springer eBook Collection. Prior to Springer, Cynthia worked to help launch a number of innovative products in the electronic space – these consist of A&I and Chemistry Databases for Elsevier as well as Thieme Medical Publishers. Before entering the STM Publishing field, Cynthia trained and worked as a supervisor and graduate student in Genomics laboratories at McGill University, Montreal, Canada.

 

Dave Cramer, XML Architect, TexTech Inc.
 
Dave Cramer has been making and reading eBooks for eight years.

Originally a physicist, he self-published a jazz reference book, which led to a new career in prepress and book composition. He learned XML in order to create OEB files for Random House, and soon was developing a DTD and writing programs to produce eBooks for the Time Warner Book Group. Five years later, Hachette was the first major publisher to move to ePub exclusively. Dave managed the technical aspects of this transition, and has now worked on nearly two thousand ePub titles, for Penguin and HarperCollins as well as Hachette. He’s also worked on XML-based automated composition systems, including an ambitious custom publishing initiative for Pearson Education. When not reading the Docbook spec or writing XSL, Dave plays with his 18-month-old son, and tries to find time to ski and bike.

 

Liza Daly, Owner, Threepress Consulting

Liza Daly is the owner of Threepress Consulting, builder of digital publishing tools. She created Bookworm, the first web-based EPUB reader, and hosts the EPUB Tools project on Google Code. Threepress promotes innovation in the publishing industry through open source software. Prior to founding Threepress, Liza was the lead developer on major online products for Oxford University Press and other academic presses.

 
Sandeep Dhawan, Vice President and Practice Lead, Aptara

Sandeep Dhawan leads Aptara's Digital Solutions group and is responsible for eBook production, content conversion, and XML-based solutions. He has deep experience in providing digital publishing solutions to major trade, professional and academic publishers and to major corporations and government organizations. Prior to joining Aptara in 2004, Sandeep was with US Computers, Inc. and Aura Systems in California, working on US Government fulfillment center operations and the development of innovative audio technologies. Sandeep holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electronics and Communications from the University of Nagpur in India.

 

Susan Danziger, President and Publisher, DailyLit
 
Susan Danziger is the CEO of DailyLit, which is the leading publisher of serialized books in digital form. DailyLit currently features over 1000 classic and contemporary books available for free or for a small fee.

Danziger brings over 15 years of publishing and licensing experience to DailyLit. She was the head of Business Affairs for one of the divisions at Random House and also joined a team to spearhead Random House’s digital book program.

Danziger graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Cornell University where she studied Comparative Literature and Art History. She also received her J.D. from New York University School of Law.


 
   
Todd Eckler,  Executive Vice President, NorthPlains

Todd Eckler has more than 15 years of executive management, sales, business development and international experience in technology companies serving the publishing and media space.  Throughout the past decade, Mr. Eckler’s efforts have helped drive the adoption of next-generation technologies that serve as the backbone for today’s digital publishing systems.

In his role as Executive Vice President, Mr. Eckler is spearheading the growth for the company’s ground-breaking TeleScope Publishing Platform. Mr. Eckler has served in management rolls for LibreDigital, Marcus Technology and Archetype, Inc.
 

Keith Fahlgren,  Product Technology Engineer, O'Reilly Media

Keith Fahlgren is the Publishing Technology Engineer at O’Reilly Media. He’s been involved with a wide variety of electronic initiatives there, from developing the open-source DocBook-XSL ePub Stylesheets to integrating content into Safari Books Online to building infrastructure around the Atom Publishing Protocol. He’s a member of the OASIS DocBook SubCommittee for Publishers, a group trying to make the DocBook XML standard more accessible for a wide range of professional publishers, and has played a key role in extending O’Reilly’s use of DocBook & ePub.

 

  Nathaniel Hoffelder, MobileRead

Nathaniel Hoffelder is on the staff of MobileRead Forums, an online community focused on ebooks and ebook readers. His responsibilities include finding and reporting ebook related news for the MobileRead blog. He is a student at George Mason University in the Computer Science department, where he is currently working towards an M.S. in Computer Science.
 

Leslie Hulse, VP Digital Business Development, HarperCollins Publishers

Leslie Hulse is the Vice President, Digital Business Development at HarperCollins Publishers. In this role, Leslie focuses on crafting partnerships with retailers, search engines and others to distribute digital content widely for marketing and commerce, including the launch of Browse Inside on Booksense.com, BN.com, and the HarperCollins sites. In addition, she works closely with the HarperMedia staff and other publishers to drive our ebook, digital audio, and other digital revenues. Leslie also oversees HC's online consumer membership programs AuthorTracker, First Look, Invite the Author, newsletters, and others in development. 

Leslie is actively involved in a number of industry groups including the AAP's Digital Issues Working Group and the Online Piracy Working Group and the BISG Digital Standards Committee.

Leslie has worked at HarperCollins for eleven years in a variety of senior financial and management roles supporting the strategic growth of our online efforts. Most recently, she has led the development efforts on www.harpercollins.com and its sister sites. In 2004 she was co-leader of the Publishing + Direct to Consumer team, from which much of HC's online strategy has evolved.

 

Angela James, Executive Editor, Samhain Publishing

In 2005, Angela James joined Samhain Publishing, Ltd, a small press company focusing on digital publishing, as its executive editor, where she has played an instrumental role in building the company from the ground up. In her executive position at Samhain, Angela is responsible for managing the publisher’s editorial services division. Her responsibilities include the management of editorial staff, quality oversight, networking and marketing efforts at regional, national and international writing conferences to promote the digital publishing industry as well as Samhain. Angela’s mission is to dragging readers (and authors) to the digital dark side, one reader at a time.

 In addition to her administrative duties and promotion of digital technology, Angela continues to edit more than 50 authors including national bestselling authors Lucy Monroe, Lilith Saintcrow, Ilona Andrews, and Deidre Knight.



 

Erica Lazzaro, General Counsel, OverDrive, Inc.

Erica manages the legal affairs for OverDrive including negotiating and drafting licensing agreements and strategic partnerships for the company’s global technology and content services.   She is actively involved in managing licenses and policies for Digital Rights Management services, patents, trademarks, copyrights, and eCommerce matters for the company.  Erica has secured digital distribution rights for the distribution and sale of titles from dozens of leading book publishers, film and TV network studios, record labels, and audiobook publishers.  Additionally, Erica works with numerous U.S. and foreign governmental entities to license OverDrive hosted library services which are in use by over 7,500 libraries domestically and abroad. An avid eBook reader, Erica is a graduate of Miami University and Cleveland-Marshall College of Law.  Erica is licensed to practice law in state and federal courts in Ohio.
 
  Bob LiVolsi, CEO and Founder, BooksOnBoard

Bob LiVolsi is CEO and founder of BooksOnBoard.  BooksOnBoard is a reseller of eBooks, downloadable audio books, and eBook Readers such as the Sony Reader and the Cybook.   With its first full quarter of revenue in the winter of 2007, BooksOnBoard is now one of the largest eBook retailers.    It was the first retailer to sell ePUB titles from the major publishers, introduced Qik Clik technology to the iPhone in February 2009, and among the first to offer MP3, DRM-free audio books.

Bob spent many years in the high tech field before founding BooksOnBoard, being the VP of Sales and Marketing for two storage networking companies that achieved # 1 market share and built successful initial public offerings, Colorado Memory Systems and Crossroad Systems.  Bob was also the global vice president for mini-cartridge tape drive sales and marketing at Hewlett Packard, and director of global business development and alliances at SAP.   He also was the VP and General Manager of the Exabyte Eagle division which designed and manufactured storage hardware.   He has been on the board of the Quarter Inch Cartridge Committee and of the Storage Networking Industry Association and was an early supporter of IDPF.

Bob also enjoys writing, having won the Writers League of Texas award for best thriller in 2005 as well as being a finalist for best narrative fiction.   A former college newspaper editor (Kent State University), Bob remains passionate about a free and unencumbered press.
 
James Macfarlane, President, Easypress Technologies

James graduated from Brunel University in 1979, London he holds a Masters Degree in Computer Science, a BSc in Aeronautical Engineering and he is a Chartered Engineer CEng. James is Managing Director of EvolvedGroup a Tech Investment company a company he formed in 2004 and is Chief Exec of Easypress Technologies Limited a company he acquired in 2005.  James is leading the businesses growth into the eBook EPUB markets with their Atomik technology which can create EPUB files for the digital book markets for any reader directly from Adobe InDesign, QuarkXPress and MS Word.

Prior to that, James was a founder and Main Board Director of Sopheon Plc in the UK and held the post of Senior VP of Global Business Development in the US.  His role consisted of spearheading Sopheon’s growth and strategic direction in the USA, leading the company’s vision, innovation and development in the field of Innovation Software.  He was also responsible for strategic partnerships to assist Sopheon’s expansion and growth he was also part of the management term which raise $30m funds in 2000 and acquired Orbital Plc for $22m in 2001. 

James was previously Founder Director and CEO for AppliedNet Limited – a company he launched in 1985. James was responsible for growing the business to $8.5m with a VC fund raising of $2.25m in 1998.  With a lead role in strategic expansion of AppliedNet’s business, he steered the company through its acquisition by PolyDoc NV a Dutch Company for $24m to form Sopheon Plc in 1999 which had a duel listing on both the AIM in the UK and the EuroNext in Amsterdam.
 
Lisa McCloy-Kelley, VP Director, Content Management Group,  Random House

Liisa McCloy-Kelley serves as VP Director, Content Management Group in the Publishing Operations group at Random House, Inc. She has worked at Random House for more than 18 years and has a long history working with eBooks and with digital standards. Her team at Random House is responsible for the systems and processes to store, manage and distribute all of the digital files that go into every book that Random House produces. Over the past two years, she has been responsible for both eBook Production and the migration to the use of XML and ePub in the eBook workflow at Random House.

 

  Robert Nell, Director Business Development, Digital Reading Business Division, Sony Electronics

Bob Nell is responsible for Global Business Development for the Sony Digital Reading Business Division.  He and his team are responsible for evaluating, developing, and managing new strategic business opportunities for the Sony Personal Reader System.  Bob is an eighteen year Sony veteran with a broad range of experience in marketing, business development and online services.
 
Steve Potash, CEO, OverDrive

Steve Potash is President and CEO of OverDrive, Inc., a company he founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1986.  Under his leadership, OverDrive has become the leading provider of digital book technologies and Digital Rights Management solutions for publishers, retailers and libraries.  OverDrive is a key technology supplier and distributor of eBook and download audio book for hundreds of US and foreign publishers, online retailers, and major public libraries.  Current customers include Microsoft Corporation, Time Warner, Adobe Systems, HarperCollins, McGraw-Hill and dozens of leading libraries coast-to-coast including Cleveland Public, New York Public and King County Public Library (WA).
 
Tyler Ruse, VP and General Manager, Ingram Digital

Tyler Ruse has been with Ingram Digital since February 2008. Leveraging his more than a decade of digital publishing experience, Mr. Ruse is building technologies and partnerships to ensure that the CoreSource digital asset management and distribution platform maintains its world-class level of service. In addition to CoreSource, Mr. Ruse is charged with leading content ingestion across all Ingram Digital platforms

    Prior to joining Ingram Digital, Mr. Ruse led the technology and product development groups at codeMantra, LLC. There Mr. Ruse built digital publishing tools and workflows as well as content distribution systems focused on helping the publishing community bridge the gap from traditional print to both print and digital products.

Mr. Ruse also spent over five years building content ingestion systems for digital book, journal, and audio content for OCLC NetLibrary, helping publishers build digital products in the industry’s infancy.
Mr. Ruse holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
 

Michael Santangelo, Electronic Resources Specialist, Brooklyn Public Library

Michael is the Electronic Resources Analyst in the Office of Materials Selection at the Brooklyn Public Library. He spent the first eight years of his library career as a children's librarian, and made the switch to electronic resources in 2007.  Over the past few years, he has appeared on WCBS Morning News and on NBC's Dateline to discuss children's literature.  He is active in the American Library Association and has served on the Intellectual Freedom Committee, various committees for the Association for Library Service to Children, the Social Responsibilities Round Table, the Office for Literacy and Outreach Services Subcommittee on Library Services to the Poor and Homeless, and the 2008 John Newbery Medal Award Committee.  He initiated and organized an ALA publication about intellectual freedom written for children called "Kids Know Your Rights", and has put together various ALA panel discussions.  Michael contributes reviews to School Library Journal and The Horn Book.  In the summer of 2008, he gave a speech at Digitapalooza entitled, "No Digital Acquisitions Librarian is an Island".
 
Andrew Savikas, Vice President of Digital Initiatives, O'Reilly Media
Andrew Savikas is the VP of Digital Initiatives at O'Reilly Media, and is the Program Chair for O'Reilly's Tools of Change for Publishing conference. He blogs at toc.oreilly.com, and is also a regular contributor to the O'Reilly Radar blog.

Andrew has worked on several key publishing technology initiatives at O'Reilly, including the design and deployment of an open-standards-based XML content distribution platform. Andrew is an advisor to Safari Books Online, O'Reilly's joint venture with Pearson Technology Group. His recent work has also included helping to plan and execute O'Reilly's ebook and digital publishing strategy.

Andrew holds a B.S. in Media Studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and an MBA from Northeastern University in Boston. He is a frequent speaker at publishing and content management conferences, and is also the author of "Word Hacks: Tips & Tools for Taming your Text".
 
Sameer Shariff, Founder & CEO, iPublishCentral a flagship product of Impelsys  Inc.

Sameer Shariff is founder and CEO of Impelsys Inc. Impelsys is a leader in providing e-publishing solutions to global publishing market. Its revolutionary products and solutions help publishers large & small to create new online products & revenue streams without significant investment. Customers include leading publishers like McGraw-Hill, Elsevier, Wolters Kluwer, Benchmark Education, Marshall Cavendish and Houghton Mifflin among others.

Impelsys is Sameer' second start up after Medisite Inc. As Chief Strategic Officer, he helped Medsite become one of the largest Internet pharmaceutical marketing companies in the United States. Under his direction, Medisite increased sales from $0 to $20 million. In 2006, Medisite was sold to WebMD for over $40 Million.

Sameer is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his BS degree in Entrepreneurial Management from the Wharton School of Business. He has served as a guest speaker at several industry events including Delhi Book Fair, O’Reilly TOC Conference 2009 and American Medical Publishers Association; and has been featured in Forbes, India Today, CMS Wire, Professional Publishing Report, Gilbane, Seybold Report and Silicon India among other publications.
 

Adam Smith, Director Product Management, Google Book Search

Adam M. Smith is a Director of Product Management at Google.  He joined Google in 2003, and he currently manages several Search products including Google Book Search, Google News, Google Finance, and Google Scholar.   

Prior to Google, Adam was a VP of New Media for Random House Inc., where he was responsible for working with the publishing divisions on digital strategy and new technology initiatives including digital distribution and print on demand .  He also participated in the Random House's venture capital and corporate development activities and was Director of Corporate Development for Bertelsmann, Inc.   In a previous life, he worked in media and telecommunications investment banking in New York and Hong Kong.  

 Adam received an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and a B.S. from the University of California at Berkeley.
 

Michael Smith, Executive Director, International Digital Publishing Forum

Michael Smith is Executive Director of the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). Michael aims to help advance the interests of publishers, technologists, and readers by evangelizing the adoption of IDPF standards for electronic reading applications and products. Michael has over 20 years of book publishing and print production expertise. Prior to joining the IDPF, Michael was employed by Toronto based romance publisher Harlequin Enterprises Ltd. where he managed eBook and book production servicing North America, UK and Australian markets.

 
  Malle Vallik, Director Digital Content & Interactivity, Harlequin Enterprises Ltd.

Malle Vallik is the Director of Digital Content & Interactivity for the Internet and Digital Division of Harlequin Enterprises Ltd.  Her current focus is on establishing Harlequin as a leader in digital publishing for women. Her responsibilities include eBooks, downloadable audio and other digital content along with continuing to build Harlequin’s strong relationship with its consumer via social media including eHarlequin.com’s community.

 

Andrew Weinstein, Vice President and General Manager, Retail Solutions,
Ingram Digital Group.
 
Andrew Weinstein joined Ingram Digital Ventures, a predecessor company to IDG, in September 2005. Previously, Mr. Weinstein spent 5-years at Lightning Source Inc., most recently as Vice President of Channel and Publisher Development. In that role he had responsibility for all aspects of Lightning Source’s eBook business. In addition, he managed the business development and operational relationships for Lightning Source’s key print on demand distribution customers, including Amazon, B&N, Ingram Book Group, NACSCORP and Baker & Taylor.

Mr. Weinstein came to Lightning Source through the acquisition of the company he co-founded JNMedia, Inc., a leading developer of publishing technology. JNMedia, Inc.’s EPODIUM technology, Electronic Publishing On Demand In Unlimited Media, helped publishers create a platform to multi-purpose book content for print, electronic, and online/offline marketing uses.

Before co-founding JNMedia, Inc., Mr. Weinstein was an Associate Director at BMG Direct, the world’s largest direct mail music club, where he managed the financial/marketing analytical group. In this capacity, he developed many of the analytical models used to evaluate the music club membership’s purchasing trends and to forecast their contribution to the business more accurately. In addition, he actively contributed to and managed the development, measurement, and deployment of all new online initiatives.

Mr. Weinstein received his B.A. in Economics from Brandeis University and his M.B.A. in Finance and Marketing from New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business.
 

Sarah Wendell, Co-creator and co-author, Smart Bitches Trashy Novels

By day Sarah Wendell is mild mannered and heavily caffeinated. By evening she dons her cranky costume, consumes yet more caffeine, and becomes Smart Bitch Sarah of Smart Bitches, Trashy Books. The site specializes in reviewing romance novels, examining the history and future of the genre, and bemoaning the enormous prevalence of bodacious pectorals adorning male cover models. In April 2009, Beyond Heaving Bosoms: The Smart Bitches’ Guide to Romance Novels was born, published by Touchstone Fireside and co-authored by Sarah and her partner in nefarious deeds, Candy Tan. Sarah has spoken at Romance Writers of America’s national conference, at the Romantic Times BookLovers’ Convention, and at several RWA chapter conferences and meetings. Her writing has appeared in Narrative Magazine, Tango Magazine, and in the SmartPop book Grey’s Anatomy 101: Seattle Grace, Unauthorized. Sarah has also been quoted in The New York Times, The New York Post, the Philadelphia Inquirer, Metro:New York, and Publishers Weekly.
