The International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) is a trade and standards organization dedicated to the development and promotion of electronic publishing.

IDPF's trade work consists of the following:

  • Industry Statistics - The collection of reliable data on digital publishing industries produced on a quarterly basis. Data includes retail and publishing sales statistics from 2002 and 2003. Full reports available to contributing companies and IDPF members only.

  • Bestseller List - participate and gain access to monthly and historical eBook bestseller data

  • Special Interest Groups (SIGs) - The Business SIG and Library SIG exist for the exchange of ideas on non-technical business and targeted industry issues.

  • Consumer Awareness - August 2002 saw the first ever Open an eBook Week. 2003 and 2004 will see additional IDPF member-driven efforts to increase consumer awareness of eBooks and eReading.

  • Surveys - Usability and consumer surveys were conducted and released to IDPF members in 2002. eBook Usage in Libraries and regular industry statistics planned for 2003. Quarterly sales reports available for IDPF Members and contributing companies.

  • Conferences - The IDPF arranges leading conferences important to its members including The Tablet PC Digital Publishing Conference 2002 and The eBook Experience  at Book Expo America 2003 and the eBooks in the Public Library Conference.

  • Press Releases and Issue Statements - Public and media release of information important to our members.

IDPFís standards work focuses on three main committees:

  • Metadata and Identifiers: Created to develop a framework for metadata standards and identifier schemes for ePublications.

  • Publication Structure: Charged with maintaining and advancing the IDPF Publication Structure, an IDPF XML-based specification for the content, structure, and presentation of electronic texts.

  • Rights and Rules: A group dedicated to creating open and commercially viable digital rights management systems.

Other important IDPF work includes:

  • Accessibility - A group which works to effectively include persons with disabilities at all points in the electronic publishing product chain.
